In December, Oprah Winfrey made headlines by flying her guests out to Apollo Bay for a bird’s eye view of the magnificent Twelve Apostles and sampling of the region’s delectable food. All part of her upcoming Australia travel show, Oprah was keen to offer her guests the chance to try the seafood on offer at Beacon Point’s famous eatery, Chris’s Restaurant. Although Melbourne is less than an hour’s drive and is often hailed as the nation’s culinary capital, Victoria’s Great Ocean Road is the home to many expansive farms and fine artisans, which provide the capital’s restaurants with the haute cuisine that they serve to guests.

Cheese World and Museum

Keep your eye out for tourist brochures dotted around information centres and hotel lobbies as many of them offer good Melbourne travel deals to the famous Cheese World and Museum located in Allansford. Cheese World is credited with helping Victoria’s dairy industry gain popularity through a series of tastings and sales in their award-winning on-site shop.

The produced sold at Cheese World couldn’t get any fresher as the shop is literally opposite the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory. Before holidaymakers explore the shop they should take some time to wander around the informative museum, where they can watch a video on cheese production and get to grips with some of the tools of the trade. Afterwards, they can visit the on-site restaurant for a ploughman’s lunch or a cheese platter to sample one of the factory’s own award-winning cheeses. Perhaps most renowned is the pepper and garlic cheese, which was named Victoria’s Best Cheese in 2010 and later scooped up the Kraft Perpetual Shield.

Chris’s Beacon Point Restaurant

Melbourne travel deals are also available on transfers to Apollo Bay, which Oprah’s guests visited just so they could dine at Chris’s Beacon Point Restaurant. The restaurant has been praised for serving up some of the world’s best seafood. The head chef Chris Burns cooks seafood with a Mediterranean accent and chargrills are the restaurant’s speciality. Chris’s Beacon Point also has stunning views out over the Twelve Apostles, with sunset being a particularly popular time for bookings.

Local Markets

If you want to experience live as the locals experience it – a must as far as Australia travel experiences go, then why not go to one of the local hangouts. By far the best way to do this is by visiting one of the region’s markets and watching how the locals spend a lazy Sunday. Queenscliff Market in the scenic Princess Park takes place on the last Sunday of every month and has over 100 stalls. Visitors can select their lunch from a wide range of fresh produce, with highlights including home-baked cakes and freshly brewed Australian coffee.
