The spooky old castles (or ‘castillos’) dotted around near lots of the main Lanzarote hotels give an exciting glimpse in to the swashbuckling past of the Island’s history with pirates and adventure on the high seas.
Overlooking the capital of the Old Town of Teguise, the new Pirate Museum will open inside the newly renovated Castillo de Santa Barbara, which was originally built as a new defence post on the site of an old wooden watchtower in the late 1500s. Legend even has it that the surrounding smaller islands and their history of battling buccaneers were the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, and the locals even tell tales of a secret tunnel running under the castle to protect those hiding from raids and attacks.
Lanzarote was an important trading post throughout the 15-1600s, and the museum will tell the stories of the Island, its inhabitants and the pirate raids that made these castles such an important feature of the area.
